Gonna! gonna! gonna!
―Ground Hawk preparing to lunge at Hughie Campbell - his catchphrase and only words.

Groundhawk is a minor character in the Dynamite Entertainment adult comic book series The Boys. He was a mindless, feral supe with literal oversized metal hammers for his hands and the faux "team leader" of the superhero team/sex cult, the G-Men.

Background[]

Almost nothing is known about Groundhawk's previous life, but it is assumed that just like other G-Men members, he was kidnapped as a child by John Godolkin, given Compound V, and trained to become a superhero as well as the leader of the G-Men. His animalistic need to kill people with his hammer-hands, his fearlessness, and inability to speak proper words other than his phrase "Gonna" is a result of the side-effects caused by Compound V. Due to the fact that he has hammers for hands, his teammates normally feed him during lunch. However, he is rather cannibalistic and would normally eat his enemies/victims alive.

Groundhawk is first seen in the comics growling and preparing to engage at Hughie Campbell but is soon stopped by one of his teammates. Vought-American would become concerned with G-Men's founder John Godolkin, who is selfish, greedy, and sexually abusive and becomes too much of a problem for the mega-corporation to deal with. Groundhawk leads the G-Men and the G-squads such as G-Force, G-Wiz, and the G-Style as they decide to take a stand against Vought's attempt at taking down Godolkin. They foolishly underestimate Vought's power and tech, that's when Vought forces fire bullets and bombs into the crowd and kill every single one of the G-Men including Groundhawk himself.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Superhuman Strength: Groundhawk is strong enough to fight off countless people with ease as well as flip over a car with his hammers.
  • Superhuman Durability: Due to Compound V, Groundhawk gained superhuman durability which allows him to withstand massive amounts of damage without being weakened. Despite this, overwhelming firepower will eventually kill him, just as it does to his G-Men teammates.
  • Hammer Hands: Groundhawk has two hammers where his hands should be, which is considered a great difficulty for him as he can't grab things. However, said hammers can be used as lethal weapons, being capable of smashing a person's head with one hit.

Weaknesses[]

  • Durability Limit: Despite his durability, overwhelming firepower will eventually kill him, just as it does to his G-Men teammates.
  • Lack of Mobility: Because of Groundhawk's hammer hands, he is unable to perform even the simplest of tasks, such as feeding himself causing his fellow team members to help feed him.
  • Low Intelligence: Groundhawk is mentally more akin to a feral animal than a human, and is as such almost always driven by his urge to attack others with his hammers. In addition, Groundhawk can only shout the word "gonna", and isn't able to speak at all otherwise.

Trivia[]

  • Groundhawk is a parody of Wolverine and a grim representation and exploitation of what Wolverine could be if he lost control of animalistic instincts and became completely feral. Beyond the visual similarities like having hammers as weapons attached to his hands instead of metal coated claws and a pointed mask with many edged patterns, Groundhawk also draws parallels with Wolverine's gruff and stiff vocabulary and love triangle relationship with Jean Grey and Cyclops.
    • The reason for the sheer ridiculousness of Groundhawk's design and personality is because the character he's based on, Wolverine, is Garth Ennis' least favorite superhero.
    • Groundhawk is also parody of Marvel's Razor Fist.

Commentary[]

  • Given his limited mental faculties and feral behavior, it's possible that Groundhawk was also killed off sometime in the past and later reanimated by John Godolkin as a mindless zombie, like his fellow G-Men member Nubia would later be.
